Multimedia Language Learning in UK Higher Education Report Authors: Gregory Toner, David Barr, Sofia Carvalho Martins, Vicky Wright In the context of continually-evolving technologies, language teaching, like other areas, for many years has been facing the challenge of how to integrate effectively computer technologies into teaching and learning. Much research is being carried out in this area across the world through bodies such as EUROCALL and CALICO. This report offers a baseline for future investigation in recent developments in the use of technology to enhance language learning. It also intends to establish extent of use and best practice within the Higher Education sector of the UK. The study was commissioned by the Centre for Excellence in Multimedia Language Learning at the University of Ulster and was conducted and administered by the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies based at the University of Southampton, among the UK Higher Education sector, with a particular focus on the use of digital language labs and how effectively these are being integrated into language pedagogy. A total of 147 responses were received from a web-based questionnaire. 87 of were from respondents working in UK universities and a total of 62 UK Higher Education establishments were represented.
